ECP Announces Date for Election of Next President of Pakistan

Quoting sources from the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), multiple news sources have indicated that the forthcoming Presidential election in Pakistan is slated to occur on March 9, 2024.

Additionally, the Election Commission will release an official schedule for the Presidential election. Notably, the constitutional term of President Arif Alvi, which lasts for five years, concluded on September 8 of the previous year. Despite this, due to the interim governance in place in the country, President Arif Alvi continues to discharge the duties of the presidency.

As per the constitution, he can hold the office of President for one month post the election and can continue in his capacity until a new President is elected.

Recently, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) have come to an agreement to forge a coalition government at the federal level. Under the pact between the two parties, Shehbaz Sharif is set to be the joint candidate for Prime Minister, while Asif Ali Zardari is being nominated for the presidency of Pakistan.

Bilawal Bhutto has already declared that the PPP and PML-N have secured the necessary votes and are in a position to establish the government.
