Umar Saif, the Caretaker Federal Minister for Information Technology, stated that this decision was made in response to strong demand from freelancers. The plan will enable them to purchase iPhones on easy installment terms, thereby facilitating their work and potentially increasing remittances through PayPal, an international payment gateway.
Additionally, the government has ambitious plans for technological advancement. July of the next year is set for the launch of 5G technology, accompanied by an auction of 300 MHz of spectrum. This move is expected to significantly boost high-speed connectivity throughout Pakistan.
In another major development, the Cabinet has approved the National Space Policy, which will allow private sector companies to utilize low orbit satellites. This policy opens new avenues for private sector involvement in space-related activities.
Parallel to these technological initiatives, the government, in collaboration with telecom stakeholders, will launch a program on January 12, 2024, for the acquisition of the latest model phones through installment plans. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) will enforce the Device Identification, Registration, and Blocking Systems (DIRBS) to ensure compliance and block handsets in case of installment payment defaults.
