Substantial Fee Hike for MBBS and BDS Karachi Medical and Dental College

The Karachi Medical and Dental College (KMDC) has recently made a significant announcement regarding the increase in fees for their MBBS and BDS programs. The increase is over 150 percent, marking a substantial rise in the cost of medical education at the institution. Along with this increase, new fee structures have been introduced.

This fee increase was confirmed by Dr. Nargis Anjum, the principal of KMDC, following the approval from the college’s governing body. The governing body is chaired by Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab.

According to the released notification, there are several changes in the fee structure. The admission fee for students on open merit has risen from Rs. 30,000 to Rs. 50,000. The tuition fee and the library fee have also seen hikes, moving from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 117,600 and from Rs. 3,500 to Rs. 10,000, respectively.

In addition to these increases, the student activity or social fee has been raised from Rs. 8,000 to Rs. 10,000. The college has also introduced new charges, including a development fee of Rs. 30,000, a laboratory fee of Rs. 10,000, and an IT fee of Rs. 5,000.

For merit seats, there is a notable increase in fees. The fee has gone up to Rs. 268,600, a significant jump from the previous fee of Rs. 101,500. The self-finance section has also seen a substantial increase. The admission fee in this category has risen by Rs. 80,000, now standing at Rs. 100,000, up from Rs. 20,000 last year.

Moreover, the tuition fee has doubled, escalating from Rs. 600,000 to Rs. 1.2 million. The transport fee has also been increased, moving from Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 36,000. The self-finance seat, which cost Rs. 651,500 last year, now costs Rs. 1,421,000, marking a significant rise in fees.

This fee hike at KMDC represents a major change in the cost of pursuing MBBS and BDS degrees, reflecting the increasing expenses associated with medical education in Karachi.
